Two of the most famous landmarks of New York,

the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are considered National Monument. Both monuments have great symbolic and historic importance and remain as a reminder of American ideals of freedom and justice for all. The people of France gave the Statue to the people of the United States as a sign of recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution. The statue now symbolizing freedom and friendship between people. In 1876 the French government commissioned the sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholsi a sculpture to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. With the help of Gustave Eiffel both began to create the colossal monument of copper. The work was completed in 1884 and sent to New York Harbour in the coming years following the 350 pieces packed in 214 boxes. The pedestal was completed in 1886. The Statue of Liberty was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1986 after its renovation. The statue represents the pillars on which the U.S. Constitution was established including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Furthermore it is a beacon for all visitors to this busy port.
