Oporto is the second largest Portuguese city

and is situated at the mouth of the Douro River. Since the year 1850 that the producers of port wine mature and store their wine in warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia, a city that is in front of Oporto. More than 50 producers of port wine and you can sample some of their products in the cellars of the Douro. The construction of some dams in 1980 made it possible for small cruise ships go up the Douro to the place where the grapes are grown on the slopes. Hotels in Oporto

The bridges over the Douro River are very beautiful, especially the Bridge Dom Luis I and the Bridge Dona Maria. The center of the city of Oporto, is dominated by the Cathedral of the 12th century with the Romanic window and a Gothic cloister. Other highlights are the neoclassical Palacio da Bolsa is a beautiful Arab Hall, the Manueline Church of Santa Clara and the church of St Francis. The most iconic monumento of the city is the Clerigos Tower. Do not miss the Sao Bento railway station. The whole area along the river called Ribeira is very beautiful and worth a walk.
