Colosseum Rome

Colosseum

It is the most iconic landmark of Rome,

the Colosseum (Colosseo) has had different names through the times, such as “Flavian Amphitheater”, the name of the Emperor Titus Flavius Vespasian who started its construction in 70 AD. Ten years after it opened with games that lasted 100 days during which, according to historians, have been killed over 5000 wild animals. Only much later in time has began calling Coliseum. The outer wall on the north side is perfectly preserved and measures 48.5 meters in height. It is the major touristy attraction in Rome. The three series of overlapping arches are articulated by Doric columns, Ionic and Corinthian, supported by robust pillars. The Colosseum could accommodate about 60,000 spectators who watched performances that consisted of vicious fights, often to the death between gladiators and beasts also. Many Christians sacrificed their lives in this amphitheater to witness to their faith. Hotels in Rome
