Santa Maria Maggiore

is one of the most beautiful churches of Rome. It is not only one of the seven pilgrimage churches or one of the four patriarchal basilicas of Rome but is also the largest and most important holy place dedicated to the worship of Mary. It was built in the fourth century and its highlights are the Sistine Chapel, the Arc de Triomphe, the Paolina Chapel and Apse Mosaic. Hotels in Rome

Arch of Triumph – The mosaics above the triumphal arch, tell the story of Jesus’ life.

Mosaic of the Apse – The mosaics in the apse are consecrated to Mary, mother of Jesus, are by Jacopo Toritti. This work led to the mosaic art at its peak.

Sistine Chapel – The request of Pope Sixtus V, Domenico Fontana added a funerary chapel, to the right aisle.

Pauline Chapel – This chapel is richly decorated with frescoes and stucco houses and the graves of two popes, Paul V and Clement VIII.
