Capital of the province of Matera,

the city with the same name is located in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy. The geographic area where is Matera has signs of civilization from the Paleolithic, the city has been founded by the Romans in the third century BC. One of the most beautiful areas of the city is called the Sassi di Matera (or The Sassi) which means Stone, a jumble of houses and caves that attract visitors for many years.
