Assisi

Assisi is a beautiful hilly town

in the Italian region of Umbria. The town developed in the 13th century in honor of San Francisco who was born here in 1182. The followers of the Franciscan Order began the process two years after his death and canonization. The city received the masterpieces of art and architecture to honor his legacy. The frescoes of Giotto and Cimabue adorn the Basilica of St. Francis, a monastery of the Franciscan Order. All art and architecture of Assisi during the Renaissance and later centuries reflect the views of San Francisco always simple, humble and tolerant to other beliefs. The church of Santa Chiara (St. Clare, founder of the Order of Poor Clares nuns) has a simple Gothic interior, the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli has inside it a splendid Renaissance. This basilica houses the Porziuncola where the Franciscan Order movement has began. The medieval castles twins are the exception to the peace and harmony that was created around Assisi over the centuries. Assisi is an excellent example of what is a hilly town in Umbria.
