Bastille

Place de la Bastille is one of the

most famous squares in Paris. The square is surrounded by a circle of traffic, which seems to remove importance to a place where history was sinister. The Bastille was a fortress built by Charles V to defend the eastern boundary of the city but quickly became a prison for political prisoners. Citizens unhappy, rebelling against the excesses of the monarchy, took the Bastille on 14 July 1789, at the beginning of the French Revolution. In this place today stands the Colonne de Juillet (July Column) of bronze with 52 m height and crowned by the angel of freedom, which honors those who died in the revolutions of 1830 and 1848. Behind lies the Bastille Opera, the largest opera house in the world, inaugurated in 1989 to celebrate the second centenary of the revolution. It is one of the most historical places of Paris. The stunning Place des Vosges is just a few steps away from Bastille. Hotels in Paris
