Nimes

The old road from Italy to Spain

was called Via Domotia, and passed by a place called Nemausus that quickly became one of the wealthiest cities of Gaul. Later started to call itself Nimes which is today a modern city and a popular tourist destination, too. Nimes has a great location, the north has the hills of the Cévennes, the south has Camargue, is also near the Mediterranean Sea. Nimes has many Roman vestiges, the amphitheater is the best known of all arenas and the best preserved in France. You must see the stunning Pont du Gard that is an aqueduct that carried water through a small river valley. Do not miss the Mount Cavalier, the Great Tower, the Cathedral, the Musée du Vieux Nimes, the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall), the Maison Carré, the Nemausus an extraordinary housing project that looks like a Mississippi steamboat and finally the Carré d’Art a museum of contemporary art designed by Norman Foster.
