The Canal du Midi is 235 km (145 mi)

and connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. It opened in 1681, it was a monumental achievement of engineering, has more than 300 significant structures such as locks, dams, bridges and a tunnel. The trade between northern and southern France before the Canal du Midi, forced to sail around Portugal and Spain, something dangerous in the 17th century. In 1980 the commercial traffic ended on the Canal du Midi. Today is a leisure route with breathtaking scenery between Toulouse in the Garonne River and Sète on the Mediterranean.
