Originally built as a museum of natural history

by Juan de Villanueva for Charles III, the Prado Museum, later became an art museum, decided by Napoleon’s brother Joseph. Opened in 1819 to house the Royal Art Collection, today, the Prado Museum is one of the best museums in the world. With more than 9000 works of art, has works by Goya, El Greco, Velázquez, Titian, Botticelli, Raphael, Veronese, Fra Angelico, Rubens, Bosch, Dumer, Brugghels and Rembrandt. The Prado is one of three major museums in Madrid, the others are the Museo Reina Sofia and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. It’s closed on Monday. Hotels in Madrid
