In the foothills of the Sierra Nevada,

lies the magnificent city of Granada which was under the dominion of the Moors between the 8th and 15th centuries. In 1492 was the last city to be taken over by Spanish Catholic monarchy. The Alhambra is a complex which tells the story of the Moorish presence in the city, is one of the most important monuments of Spain, surely one of the most visited. The Islamic culture and crafts reached unprecedented levels in Granada. The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby is the Palace of Generalife (summer residence of the Moorish rulers) and the old casbah of Albaicin, a maze of narrow streets with whitewashed houses. On a hill is the Church of St Saviour where you get a wonderful view of the Alhambra. Granada has the largest concentration of buildings Moors in Europe and has a large student population that guarantees entertainment day and night. Do not miss the Sacromonte a hill with beautiful views, the Granada Cathedral, the Bib-Rambla that runs some narrow streets to the cathedral, the Carthusian monastery of Charterhouse, the Bermejas Towers and the Archaeological Museum.
