Fatima is a town in Portugal known worldwide

for Marian apparitions elapsed in May 13, 1917. Such apparitions are recognized by the Catholic Church. Fatima Sanctuary received five papal visits, one by Paul VI in 1967, three by John Paul II in 1982, 1991 and 2000, and by Benedict XVI in 2010. Religious tourism is very strong in Fatima, is very important in the economy of this city and the center of Portugal. In the days of pilgrimage, believers arrive in large numbers to the sanctuary, coming not only from Portugal but as elsewhere in Europe and the world, in May 13th the shrine usually receives about one million visitors.  The distances to the main Portuguese cities are 125 km to Lisbon, 195 kms to Oporto and 85 km to Coimbra.
