Almourol Castle

Almourol Castle Portugal

Almourol Castle

The first inhabitants of the place were perhaps the oldest in Portugal,

the Lusitanian, then the Romans, the Vandals and Goths Christians. At the beginning of the 8th century, the Iberian Peninsula was invaded by Muslims and they have been building the first castle on the island, called it Almorlan meaning “high stone” in Arabic. Then came the Reconquista, during which the Moors were driven back to North Africa by the Christian forces, the Almourol Castle was captured from the Moors in 1129 by Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. The Almourol Castle is set on a rocky island in the Tagus River, which then flows to the capital Lisbon. Almourol Castle is one of the most beautiful castles of Portugal. You can reach Almourol Castle from the cities of Lisbon, Coimbra and Santarém. Tancos and Vila Nova da Barquinha are two small villages near the castle where you can start the boat tour.
