Founded in the 13th century on the banks
of the Amstel River as a small fishing village, today Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe. Known for its liberal attitudes, history and rich culture, the city has in its channels one of the major attractions. Known as “Venice of the North” combines the beauty of the canals with beautiful buildings and fascinating museums. The Old Church (Oude Kerk) is one of the most beautiful buildings of the city, do not miss also the New Church (Kerk Neuwe) and Houten Huis (Wooden House). Most of the historic centre of Amsterdam was built in the 17th century, the golden age of the city that was one of the richest in the world. Amsterdam had commercial links to the Baltic, North America, Africa, Asia and Brazil. It was during this time that was built the Royal Palace. Using the Amsterdam Tram is a good way to explore the city, especially when you are tired. Amsterdam has many museums, the most importants are the Rijksmuseum where stands out the work of Rembrandt “The Nightwatching” and the Van Gogh Museum. There are also the Stedelijk Museum and the Rembrandt House Museum. The Anne Frank House shows next to a canal where was hide a Jewish woman in the face of Nazi persecution, it is worth a visit.
