Delos

Delos is a small island

and a site of great archaeological importance. Located south of Mykonos, Delos, was in the legend, the birthplace of Apollo and his sister Artemis. The importance of Delos grew religious and commercially, Athens founded the Delian League against the Persian threat. Pilgrims from all over the Mediterranean, traders, bankers and sailors went to Delos when the island reached its zenith. Delos was the largest slave market in the Mediterranean followed by a long decline. Almost deserted, was part of the Ottoman Empire and then a pirate base. Currently visitors to Delos, are not allowed to stay on the island. There are excursions from Mykonos to Delos.
