Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a dynamic city

a great mix of cultures, a contemporary fusion of East and West. The historic Star Ferry connects the island of Hong Kong to the frantic Kowloon, with a vast horizon of skyscrapers in the distance, it’s hard not to marvel at this city of contrasts, with its eclectic mix of exotic and high tech, modern and ancient, past and present. Modern skyscrapers and five-star hotels are covered with bamboo scaffolding, Cantonese and Mandarin food stalls are surrounded by gourmet French bistros, Rolls Royces passing by, pushing wheelbarrows, street vendors selling chicken feet and dried squid . The largest shopping centers in the world vying for their attention with lively street markets that sell traditional products. The western influence in Hong Kong comes from its heritage as a former British colony. The British influence is still evident today, the school system for the free market economy, the rugby teams to double-decker buses and pubs and traditional English afternoon tea. Still with British influences Hong Kong has always been rooted in Chinese traditions with Chinese medicine shops, street vendors, lively restaurants, old men taking their caged birds for walks in the park and colorful festivals. An easy city to visit Hong Kong is surprisingly compact, with most of its streets with information in English. Public transports are very well organized and punctual, the Star Ferry and the trams are tourist attractions themselves. However, walking is the best way to get around the city, especially in the narrow lanes and intriguing footpaths and alleys. The best places to get a sense of the greatness of Hong Kong is Kowloon, across the river and Victoria Peak, atop a hill just above the highest skyscrapers. The route is on a streetcar with a fantastic slope. The city of Shenzhen is immediately north of Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou are also very close to Hong Kong. Hotels in Hong Kong
