Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef off the

northeast coast of Australia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This stunning natural site extends for 2000 km (1250 mi) and covers an area of 350,000 sq km (135,100 sq mi). It is the largest coral reef in the world. There are more than 3000 reefs, continental islands and atolls that make up the National Park of the Great Barrier Reef. This park helps to control human impacts especially in fishing and tourism. Tourism generates important revenue for the state of Queensland but the mass tourism is affecting some species of coral. One of the most famous archipelagos in this area is the Whitsunday Islands. Cairns is the largest city and there you can find plenty of organized tours to the Great Barrier Reef, Airlie Beach is also an option to start a tour. The reef is under threat of global warming, with enormous losses. Corals have a great importance for the global ecosystem. Whales, dolphins and turtles are some of the species that you can see in this wonderful site. It is one of the most visited places of Australia. Hotels in Cairns
