Phuket is Thailand’s largest island

and also the most popular. Located in the Andaman Sea on the west coast of southern Thailand, is an island province. In December 2004, was hard hit by the tsunami that struck much of Asia. Many resorts and coastal villages were quite destroyed. Phuket recovered heritage destroyed and today there are noticeable signs of the disaster. Phuket is a very mountainous island with its highest peak at 529 m (1745 ft), is Mai Thao Sip Song. The island is extremely wooded and has beaches worthy of a postcard, with the turquoise Andaman Sea of the typical architecture of Phuket has a lot of Portuguese influence, especially in its capital, Phuket City. There is also the influence of Islam and about 30 percent of the population is Muslim. Phuket has a perfect location as a starting point to other location like Phi Phi Islands, Ko Lanta, Similan Islands, Surin Islands, Phang Nga Bay and Ko Racha. Since 1980 Phuket is known worldwide with an excellent holiday destination, has huge beaches with large expanses of white sand and warm waters, small beaches is also located in coves. Although a large island, Phuket has grown too much and not always in an orderly manner, it shows in Patong, a seaside city with major hotels, and an uncontrollable prostitution. There are bars and nightclubs with shows in particular lady boys.  An important event in 1785 marks the history of Phuket, the island was attacked by Burmese troops in an attempt to take control of the country, the governor has died but his widow and sisters fought, the people united and managed to attack the Burmese until they retire. The island has a distinct culture from its time as a major commercial port, where people came from Middle East, India, Malaysia, China and Portugal. Portuguese traders left in Phuket, a legacy of Sino-Portuguese architecture in the island’s capital, Phuket Town. Temples and mesquias represent Muslim populations and Buddhists.
