For nearly 400 years

from 1350, Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam and the home of 33 kings . Rich and powerful traders from across Europe came to the Far East. During a Burmese invasion in 1767, the city was totally destroyed and the new capital was established in Bangkok something that lasts up to today. Currently, this Thai old town is UNESCO World Heritage Site, a canal was built to connect the three rivers. Many of the temples were built in Khmer style. Many are in ruins, but they are still magnificent, and there are a great figures of Buddha, including Wat Phra Meru in Sri Lanka is said to be 1,300 years old. Unfortunately, many figures have been damaged by the invading Burmese and more recently art thieves stole some of the heads of the figures. However, this is a sacred place for Thais, who dress many of the Buddha figures in yellow robes, flower petals and burning incense sticks dispersion reverently at his feet. Temples are scattered in ruins in Ayutthaya. The main temples can be visited on foot, but hiring a bike you may be able to see more of this extensive site. Wat Phra Si Sanphet was the largest temple in Ayutthaya and also served as a palace. This beautiful palace was built in the fourteenth century, has three magnificent stupas. The adjoining Wat Mongkhon Bophit has the largest Buddhas in Thailand which was cast in bronze in the fifteenth century.
