Popocatepetl

Popocatepetl is one of

the most active volcanoes in Mexico. Popocatepetl means “smoking mountain” in Aztec. For the last 600 years its eruptions have been soft with columns of ash rising only near the summit. Popocatepetl is located 45 km (28 mi) from the city of Puebla and 70 km (44 mi) from the heart of Mexico City. At the high of 5465 m (17760 ft) the threat is a constant for 40 million people living within its potential range. Popocatepetl is an icon of modern Mexico as it was for the Aztecs and the colonial Spanish. There are 14 monasteries on the mountain, built by the early Franciscan, Dominican and Augustinian. The monasteries are excellent examples of colonial architecture and provide a great place to rest for the visitors that want to get the summit. These monasteries are considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Hotels in Mexico City
