Barranquilla is a port city known as

La Puerta de Oro de Colombia (The Golden Gate of Colombia). Built on a promontory where the Magdalena River flows into the Caribbean Sea, Barranquilla is a cosmopolitan and multi-ethnic city. It has the largest Jewish community in Colombia and the smaller communities of Syrian, Lebanese, German, Italian and Chinese. The Carnival of Barranquilla dates from the 19th century, is one of the largest in the world, second only to the Rio Carnival. The Carnaval of Barranquilla has been designated a UNESCO Patrimony of Humanity.
